 Surprise Proposal in Chicago

As Chicago surprise proposal photographers, we’ve had the privilege of witnessing some of the most genuine, unscripted moments of people’s lives. No two proposals are the same — different locations, different stories, different tears. What stays the same is our job: stay hidden, stay ready, and capture the moment your partner never saw coming. Here are some of our favorite surprise proposal stories from around Chicago.

Jeremy & Mandie — Spring Proposal at the Chicago Lakefront

Some proposals are planned months in advance. Jeremy had been carrying that ring for weeks, waiting for the perfect Chicago spring day to finally arrive.
He reached out to us quietly,  the way all the best proposal plans start. We coordinated the location in advance, scouting the Chicago lakefront for the right spot where we could stay out of sight while still capturing the full skyline behind them. With those iconic Chicago skyscrapers reflecting off the lake, we knew exactly where to position ourselves.

Jeremy led Mandie down to the waterfront under the most natural pretense, just a spring walk along the lake. What she didn’t know was that we were already there, cameras ready, waiting for the moment he stopped walking and turned toward her. When he got down on one knee, everything stopped. The city kept moving behind them but in that frame, it was just the two of them. Mandie’s reaction was everything, the surprise, the tears, the laugh, the immediate yes. The kind of moment you can’t direct or stage, only witness and capture.

Right after the proposal she did what everyone does in 2026,  got straight on FaceTime to share the ring with family. Honestly one of our favorite moments to photograph because it’s so real.
After the proposal we took Jeremy and [Name] around Navy Pier for portraits — the Ferris wheel, the waterfront, the open lakefront path. That golden spring light made every frame.
Congratulations to both of you !! We are so glad we were there.

Jimmy & Katherine — Winter Surprise Proposal at Millennium Park

engagement shot in Chicago

Our surprise proposal adventure started out with Stacy ( Jimmy’s sister) reaching out to us to see if we’d be able to photograph and guide him. (The answer to this is always yes, by the way).  She explained how it was going to happen: Jimmy was suppose to fly from North Wisconsin to Chicago and propose to Katherine at the Christkindlmarket Chicago. It sounded great! We had it all planned, where to go and how to capture it all. But, things don’t always go as planned. The day before, we got an extreme winds warning in Chicago and Jimmy got a warning for 10-12 inch of snow fall for Wisconsin.

So, Jimmy decided they will drive instead. Since Christkindlmarket Chicago was closed because of the strong winds, we had to find another place for the surprise proposal.

With previous knowledge from Stacy, we knew that Jimmy likes the Chicago Christmas Tree. We then texted Jimmy the idea of proposing in the Millennium Park Balcony that faces the Christmas Tree.

Jimmy convinced Katherine to go to Millennium Park to meet his professor from the university. Finally, Jimmy got down on one knee and Katherine was completely surprised and couldn’t stop crying happy tears and said YES, OF COURSE!

Jimmy did such a good job of orchestrating the Surprise Proposal in Chicago and keeping it a secret from Katherine, which made for one of the most genuine and sweetest proposals! Not to mention the ring is gorgeous! I love the box with light beam!

Congratulations to both of you, and so glad we were there to document this incredible moment!

Update! Here is the link to their beautiful wedding in Bahamas on Green Turtle Cay Island.
